University of Tasmania

Engineering Room 304

Sandy Bay Campus

Cost  $85.00

Students with learning and literacy difficulties, and students for whom English is not their first language, struggle with the literacy requirements of TAFE and VET delivered programs. They can find it difficult to access, participate and progress through the learning programs being provided, due to difficulties with reading, writing and organisational skills.

Assistive technologies can play a key role in removing literacy barriers and providing compensatory tools to accommodate the learning needs of students. This hands-on workshop will explore a range of assistive technology literacy support options on the iPad to support teachers and those delivering programs to optimize student learning, and to assist students’ to manage their own learning. The use of the research based Universal Design for Learning Guidelines (www.udlcenter.org) will be used as a framework to deliver the content of this workshop.

This hands-on workshop will provide:

  • Strategies to use iPads to engage learners
  • Using iPads to allow learners multiple ways to express what they know
  • An up-to-date understanding of the range of assistive technology literacy support tools available on the iPad for use in the classroom, workshops, learning centres and training environments
  • Strategies for empowering learners to use technology to manage their own learning
  • Useful internet links and resources
