Assistive technology is a term for any device, system or design, whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, modified or customised, that allows an individual to perform a task that they would otherwise be unable to do, or increase the ease and safety with which a task can be performed.
Assistive technology includes equipment, techniques, software, etc that allow a task to be performed.
A wide range of assistive software computer programs are available for use at home, in the work place and in the class room. The programs vary to assist a range of abilities. Most programs can be purchased through specialist software companies, and there also some freeware programs available that can be downloaded from the internet.
